6 Years of Us.

What is the theme of the typical April marketing blog? Spring cleaning. Make sure you tidy up your space, so your mind is clear. Plant your marketing seeds now so by the summer, they start to grow. All great topics, and advice that we would give to any of our clients. But this blog is less about the month and more about us.

It has been six years since the start of the pandemic that changed our world. What is the one thing everyone has had in common over this time? We all survived. We all lived through — and now reminisce about — those days of uncertainty, wiping down groceries, and that feeling of uncontrollable anxiety when jobs were lost, school was canceled, and life as we knew it ended.

Through that, though, so much was gained. And now, we bring you to what our blog is about this month: us. Making Waves Marketing. Six years ago, our CEO lost her very prestigious, high-paying job at a nationally known company from one week to the next (no joke — that abrupt. Marketing plans were getting finalized, and then a company-wide layoff a week later).

Some people, in that jobless time, decided to make the most of it. Raise your hand if you found yourself in your sourdough era?! Some got into shape — Peloton fanatics, that’s a shoutout to you. And some took their future into their very own hands and started a marketing empire from their kitchen table.

First, just a one-woman show, turned into a company of three. And here we are today. Thriving. Growing this business every day. We shared a post recently of our six years of Making Waves and chose an image that best represented each year. Year one’s photo was a mug that said, “You can’t quarantine the hustle.” Fitting for that first year. In the second year, we shared a photo of one of our most notable clients and us smiling at the event. We chose this one because that was the first time we looked at each other and felt like, wow… people are noticing us. We are really doing this.

It felt good. To start in a time of unknowns and be working at that caliber by year two — no words. No more Corporate America. Seeing the results and getting the satisfaction that this was the fruit of our labor, and no one else could take credit for that. We felt like we were making it. The four photos that followed were just us — celebrating this “job” we get to do. Holidays, events, and shows we attended. All of them symbolize the past six years.

There have been hard times; we don’t mean to make it sound like this has been nothing but rainbows and sunshine. But the truth is, those hard times were all in our hands. Deciding what clients to take, how to brainstorm a tough campaign strategy, and how to handle it when a client was trying to get away with “scope creep” (if you know, you know).

Half of marketing firms fold within the first five years of business. We could say we’re one of the lucky ones who didn’t, but that would downplay the work and heart we put into our clients every day. Why are we successful? Because we are tenacious. Because we get the job done no matter what. Because we set healthy boundaries. Because we use our experience effectively. But most of all, because we have each other.

Working with highly intelligent women who understand you and fix your crown — how could that not be a recipe for success? We’ve thought about what advice we would give someone just starting out. Our answer is simple: know your worth. Gone are the days of stamping a timesheet. This is a brand-new world. No one is smarter than you because you possess unique gifts. Don’t be afraid to be bold. To speak on your accomplishments. But keep that humility, because at the end of the day, all we have is our reputation and our character.

In six years, our client roster has grown, but our confidence has grown even more. We are proud of the company we started and are just as proud in April 2026. Because our goals and fundamentals have always stayed true to us. Anniversaries are a huge deal, especially when you get to celebrate them with the people you love and respect the most.

Thank you to all the honorary wave makers who have helped make our dreams come true. But mostly — here’s to us. The hustle is hard sometimes, but the rewards are so, so big.
